My Dream Car: The Audi R8
“The slowest car we have ever built”.
Audi’s famous strapline and beautiful advert were the first things to catch my eye about the R8, back when it had first been released to the world in a flurry of speed and sleekness. Seeing the can being slowly pieced together caught my eye whilst I sat on the sofa. Only a second later I realised that I was already completely hooked.
It turns out that it wasn’t just me who fell in love with Audi’s first ever supercar, the R8. Even still, the web is full of people jibbering and jabbering about the R8 – and back then everything from Top Gear to car blogs couldn’t stop talking about its good looks. The sleek lines and good looks of the R8 seem to ensure that everyone likes it, without fail.
Even when they are chunky, Audi cars stay good looking. The Audi’s racing history is clear in their powerful, masculine advertising, and I can never shake that impression when I walk around an Audi showroom. The TT was their prettiest car, and then they went and upgraded it to make the look even closer to beauty. The design ladder was clearly in action when they stepped up to producing this beautiful car.
The Audi R8 looks stunning. As fast cars go, a sleek shape littered with aerodynamic features is always a good way to start. Add to that a brilliantly “Audi” front grill and the attractive dual rear grill, and suddenly the car looks more and more like the supercar it is. In my opinion, the shape of this car is nigh on perfect, and seeing one drive past me never seems to get old. As with all supercars, one isn’t enough. Audi are now releasing the R8 Spyder, just to carry on the supercar trend.
Not only do you get these good looks, but we haven’t even addressed the sparky V10 under the hood. Sure, I can check out the lists of facts and figures – but seeing that sleek shape and feeling the ground tremble really tells me every tiny little thing that I really need to know about this car.
Impressively, if you want to own a used Audi R8 rather than an expensive new one, the cost is quite dramatically reduced. £65k isn’t just a random figure plucked from the air – I have actually found R8s in various locations that cost about this much. If the initial outlay was holding you back from buying one, then this resale price may be starting to tempt you more and more. Of course for us lot who can’t reach even that price range, a simple used Audi will be a more than apt replacement!
